Helpful Hints to
Prevent Wire Transfer Fraud
Wires are Instant and Often Irreversible
Many scammers use wire transfers to commit fraud because wire transfers are instant and often irreversible. Fraudsters can move money from your account faster than you can imagine.
Keep Personal Info Private
Never share your bank account details, card numbers, or Social Security Number with anyone you don’t know and trust—and never send this info by text or email.
Don’t Wire Money to Strangers
Only send wires to people and businesses you know personally.
Watch Out For Scams
- If someone claims to be a relative in trouble, pause and verify with family before sending funds.
- If you haven’t met face-to-face, don’t send money. Romance and friendship scams are common.
- If a buyer offers more than your asking price on third party websites, it’s likely a scam.
- Some scammers build trust for months—or even years—before asking for money. Always stay cautious.
